Scientists for Migrant Learning & Education (SMiLE!)
Mission.
Scientists for Migrant Learning and Education (SMiLE!) is an educational initiative that aims to introduce migrant youth to the sciences through science fairs and shadow-a-scientist opportunities.
About us.
We are a group of Northwestern University PhD students from diverse scientific disciplines.
Our goals are to:
show that science takes many forms, from the natural sciences to social sciences to computer science;
show that scientists come from all walks of life;
and make science fun and interactive!
Our vision is to inspire migrant youth to think about potential career paths in STEM, an area that could sorely benefit from their perspectives.
We host science fairs and shadowing opportunities for migrant youth in Chicago. Our science fairs include presentations and hands-on learning activities for youth, K-12. Our shadowing opportunities involve bringing junior and senior high school students to the Northwestern campus so they can be immersed in a higher education setting and shadow a PhD student for a day. We also host science classes and workshops at schools.
We boast a diverse team of female, immigrant, and BIPOC scientists. We also represent diverse scientific disciplines: engineering, psychology, anthropology, sociology, chemistry, earth and planetary sciences, and more.
